What Every Equipment Owner Wishes They Knew Sooner
Heavy equipment has a way of teaching expensive lessons.
Sometimes it's a major failure. Sometimes it's a small problem ignored for too long. And sometimes nothing actually breaks, but years later you realize you were spending money in a place you never really questioned.
After nearly three decades around equipment, I've seen enough of those lessons to know that many of them have very little to do with the machine itself.
Here are a few I think are worth learning sooner rather than later.
Cheap and Inexpensive Are Not the Same Thing
There is nothing wrong with buying something for less.
If two options deliver the same result and one costs less, that's an easy decision.
The mistake is assuming the purchase price tells you which one actually costs less.
A cheaper component that requires more labor, wears faster, creates another problem, or simply doesn't perform can become very expensive.
At the same time, paying a premium because of the name on the box doesn't guarantee value either.
Price is one metric.
What happens after you install it is where the rest of the math begins.
The Machine Usually Tells You Something Before It Gets Expensive
Machines communicate.
Different noise.
Different temperature.
Different wear.
A leak that wasn't there before.
A component that suddenly isn't lasting as long.
A change in production.
An operator saying, “This doesn't feel right.”
The difficult part is that none of those things necessarily look urgent when it first appears.
And operations are busy.
So the machine keeps working.
Until the small observation becomes a much larger conversation.
I've learned to respect the people who notice those little changes, especially operators and mechanics who spend every day around the equipment.
They often see the problem developing long before anybody looking at a monthly report does.
Maintenance History Is More Valuable Than We Sometimes Treat It
A work order shouldn't only tell you what happened yesterday.
Over time, it should help you understand what keeps happening.
What are we replacing repeatedly?
Which machines are consuming more than similar machines?
Where are failures occurring?
Has something changed?
Are we solving the problem or repeatedly treating the symptom?
The individual repair matters.
The pattern matters more.
You don't need sophisticated analytics to begin seeing those patterns either.
Sometimes putting a year's worth of history on the table and asking good questions tells you quite a bit.
Planned Downtime and Unplanned Downtime Are Very Different Animals
Every machine eventually stops.
Components wear out.
Maintenance has to happen.
GET has to be changed.
Fluids have to be serviced.
Buckets need attention.
Engines eventually need rebuilding.
The objective isn't some imaginary world where the equipment never stops.
It's knowing as much as possible about when it's going to stop and why.
A four-hour repair planned for Tuesday morning is not the same operational problem as the same four-hour repair happening unexpectedly in the middle of production.
Predictability has value.
The Person Closest to the Machine May Know More Than the Spreadsheet
I'm a believer in data.
We're going to have more of it, and better tools for understanding it.
That's a good thing.
But I've also learned not to dismiss the person standing next to the machine.
An experienced operator can notice a change in how a bucket fills.
A mechanic can recognize a wear pattern.
A maintenance manager may know that a supposedly isolated failure has happened three times before.
The spreadsheet and the person in the field shouldn't compete with each other.
They should inform each other.
That's where the useful information usually starts showing up.
Sometimes the Best Decision Is to Leave Something Alone
We're constantly being sold improvements.
New technology.
New components.
New systems.
New ways of doing something we've done for years.
Some of them really are better. More efficient. More effective.
Some aren't.
And some may be better somewhere else but not in your operation.
There is no prize for changing something that already works.
If you're considering a change, understand why.
What problem are we solving?
What improvement are we expecting?
How will we know whether we actually got it?
If nobody can answer those questions, maybe the operation doesn't need another solution yet.
Experience Is Mostly Remembering What the Last Mistake Cost You
I've made enough mistakes over the years to know that experience isn't some magical ability to always know the answer.
A lot of it is simply recognizing situations you've seen before.
You remember the supplier who promised something they couldn't deliver.
The small leak that became a big repair.
The cheap part that wasn't cheap.
The expensive part that wasn't any better.
The operator who turned out to be right.
And hopefully, the next time something similar happens, you ask a better question a little earlier.
That's probably one of the biggest things I wish I'd understood sooner:
You don't need to know everything about the machine. You need to keep getting better at listening to what the machine and the people around it are telling you.
